Black Pudding Murder: Introducing the Fog Busters Detectives: Young at Heart – A Bit Older in Body

Rate this book
When aging friends form a detective agency in their Scottish village, their likelihood of success seems dubious. One is blind, two have hearing problems, one uses a crutch—and the two youngest members are from America, not Scotland.
Dubbing themselves the Fog Busters, the friends vow to solve a murder that local police have labeled as Death by Misadventure. Indeed, misadventure seems to follow the Fog Busters when the killer attempts to stop them from investigating.
Add in a lost treasure of rare Scottish coins, a false prophet, a string of house breakings and dog nappings, and a dog fighting ring—and the Fog Busters have the recipe for laughter and danger. With four unattached members of their group, they also have a chance at romance. But do they have the ability to solve the string of crimes that haunt their small village—and will all of them survive throughout the investigation?

Seasoned in age pals start an investigator group and call themselves “The Fog Busters” They’re from a quaint Scottish town, but the prospect of their accomplishments appears unconvincing. Most of them have health issues and the younger ones, well they’re not even Scottish but from the USA. Murder is in the air and the Fog Busters are determined to find out who the culprit is. This is a sticky case that even the police are scratching their heads about. When the killer tries to halt the investigation, the calamity appears to shadow the Fog Busters. Even with dogs being stolen dog, dogs forced to fight in the ring, numerous house invasions, precious Scottish coins gone missing and much more mishaps, all the Fog busters can do is face the danger. With a load of crimes to be solved in the spooky little village—who will survive and who will perish? The characters are thought-provoking, the mystery entertaining, and the humor brings the story together. Awesome read!

As a Scot I can totally relate to the setting, and the group of elderly citizens who make up the cast of characters. The group like to meet up to put the world to rights. What's on their minds? Three murders! Together, they form a group called Fog Busters to try to solve the murders. They lead the readers on a real romp as they investigate the killings, and the writing is particularly vivid. The characters positively leap off the page. The author has done an excellent job in presenting us with rounded and likeable people, and spot of romance to round out the tale. I do love a murder mystery, and the author brings the plot to a satisfying conclusion whilst allowing the reader to play along too. Highly recommended!

Great Characterizations ! ! !

Very good introductions for the new senior sleuths/detectives group! My mind was picturing every incidents that occurred to the group in this story. Each person has its own individual personalities which was nicely developed in the story. A good endings
to this book. Looking forward to start reading the next book #2 and continue with their adventures. P.S. I am hoping each will have future increase in retirement funds to enjoy soon! ! !

I loved this story of elderly detectives. It made me laugh a lot. I felt anger at some of the evil things that the 'fog busters' uncovered and grateful that they solved the crimes and brought the criminals to justice. It is a great book and I hope it will be the first in a series about these great old, but young-at-heart, friends.

Intriguingly funny

I enjoyed this story about a diverse group of friends who set out to solve a murder, but also to find treasure. I liked the way that they combined their talents in order to find answers.

Before beginning this novel, I had the idea this "cosy mystery" would be a humourous and quaint "light read" set in Scotland, but on the first page I was thrust into the scene of a serious crime. Enter our dauntless "mature" investigators and some dangerous rogue characters, and the game was on. The story felt a little like "The Famous Five plus one" post-retirement. I liked how no ailment or age was able to diminish the determination of the "Fog Busters" in solving a crime that had been signed off by the police as "death by misadventure". Mobility restrictions, visual impairment and hearing loss could not slow the ambitions of these friends, even when nefarious evildoers inflicted physical injury and insult to deter their persistent investigators from uncovering a cruel and lucrative crime racket. Confronting evidence of animal cruelty, questionable liaisons and threats failed to prevent the Fog Busters from advancing their case. They even managed time to hunt for an ancient and valuable coin collection and nurture budding romances along the way. It soon became clear only death would stop these friends from succeeding - and with the forces against them, that could be a reality.
