NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER 2021
CINDY AND MIKE JACOBS, RED OAK, TX
"Now the Lord is the Spirit:
And where the Spirit of the Lord is,
There is liberty."
(2 Corinthians 3:17, KJV)
This is the theme of this year's National Day of Prayer.
WALKING IN THE SPIRIT
The Lord our "God is Spirit; and they that worship Him, must worship Him in Spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). Do we as a nation still walk by the Spirit of God? The powerful healing evangelist, John G. Lake, who walked and lived by the Spirit, said this: "In the beginning, man's spirit was the dominant force in the world. When he sinned, his mind became dominant. Sin dethroned the spirit and crowned the intellect. But grace is restoring the spirit to its place of dominion."
Scripture addresses this very thing when it says, "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another so that you do not do the things you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law" (Galatians 5:16-18, KJV). "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25, KJV). And "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing..." (John 6:63, NKJV).
ONE NATION UNDER GOD
It appears that our nation has lost its way. One of our first presidents and an author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, lets us know our founders were concerned for America to remain in firm relationship with God. They had dedicated the nation to the Lord and wanted it to forever rely on and honor Him. He said: "And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?"
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." (Paraphrased from Abraham Lincoln's 1838 speech at the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois.)
America's second president, John Adams, warned, "Liberty once lost is lost forever."
President Ronald Reagan reiterated that concern. A nation that honors God is blessed, but we can destroy ourselves from within when we attempt to govern by what "seems right to a man" (Proverbs 14:12, ESV). He said, "If we ever forget that we are one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under."
As we humble ourselves to pray for America, let us remember the blessings and goodness the Lord has given us these past 245 years. I know we all strongly desire to remain a nation that fears the Lord. None of us wants to lose the favor He has bestowed upon us. But how long will He allow us to follow our own way? How long will He tolerate our sinful practices? We acknowledge we are a nation in great need of a Savior. We need a move of God in these United States of America.
JOIN US AS WE PRAY:
• Pray our president receives guidance and direction from the Lord.
"For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers." (Proverbs 11:14, NIV)
• Pray that America will turn and remember the Lord; seeking and relying on His guidance once again.
“All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and He rules over the nations.” (Psalm 22:27-28, NIV)
• Pray that our nation would pursue righteousness rather than sin.
• "Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people." (Proverbs 14:34, NIV)
• Pray for godly wisdom and the fear of the Lord to direct our actions and our country.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10, NIV)
• Pray that we would be a nation that honors the name of the United States of America and we would be united in love, mind, and thought.
"I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought." (1 Corinthians 1:10, NIV)
• Pray that God hears our prayers and will move mightily on behalf of our nation.
"...We do not make requests of You because we are righteous, but because of Your great mercy. Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For Your sake, my God, do not delay, because Your [nation] and Your people bear Your name." (Daniel 9:18-19, NIV)
