"A wish to understand why you suffer - a wish to see what part you play
in the fact that you always feel rejected, that you feel unwanted, that
you feel unworthy, that you feel inferior... the shock plus your wish to
understand it - instead of go along with it, like crying - your wish to
understand it, those two elements together will always lead to a higher
level of insight. Which puts you outside of the mechanical problem so
that you can indeed see that the world out there and the world in here
takes you over only because you're unconscious, only because you live in
a state of spiritual sleep thinking that you're wide awake.
You're not wide awake at all, you're sound asleep and you don't even
understand what that means. Well, I'll give you your first clue. The
fact that you're uncertain, that you have so many doubts, that you are
lonely in spite of the fact that you're married and have a family and
friends. The very fact that you are in pain, psychological pain at all
means that you are sound asleep spiritually. Now just face that as a
fact.
You face that and that means that you will want to understand yourself
instead of deceiving yourself by saying, for example, that it's that
wicked world's fault out there that you are in pain. It's not at all.
The world out there with all its foolish finances, with all its wrong
methods of healing, the world out there, I tell you, has no hold on you
at all except as you stay asleep. Wake up and the grip is loosened and
you are free. Freedom, inner freedom and understanding are the same
thing."
