"An Invitation to Dinner
A man was seated at home one afternoon when a business associate
telephoned and said, 'My wife is gone for the weekend, so I could
make dinner tonight and then we can go through all those financial
reports we need to get done. Why don't you come over at six o'clock?'
And the man who was seated at home said, 'Fine, that's a good idea,
I'll be there.'
So the invited was just about to hang up when the inviter said,
'Oh, by the way, I'm expecting a very important phone call and I
can't leave the house. On the way over, would you stop at the
market about a block from my house, and pick up a loaf of bread?'
And the invited said, 'Sure, I'll stop, I understand.'
When he got to the friend's house, he was out on the porch and said,
'Thanks for the bread. Ah, I forgot something else. Would you walk
on back and get a quart of milk, please?'
So the friend said yes, and he bought the quart of milk, returned
and there was his friend setting the table. Then the doorbell rang
and the friend said, 'I want to watch for this telephone call which
could come any minute. Would you answer the door please?'
So the invited one went to the door and when he opened it, there was
the pizza delivery man and the pizza delivery man handed over the
package with a ticket - are you ahead of me?
Afterward, the men cleared the table off, got all the business papers
out, and got them ready for a Monday morning conference. And so the
invited one went on home. He was tired, it had been a long day and he
went to bed and fell asleep instantly.
But right at the stroke of midnight, he suddenly jumped up in his bed,
looked up, his eyes were wide open, and he exclaimed, 'They're right!
I'll never miss another meeting down at New Life Foundation. They're
absolutely right and for the first time I saw it.'
'Let's see, he invited me for dinner and I bought the dinner -
everything was the exact opposite of what it was supposed to be.'
Now look, the world is living in pretense that this isn't the way it is.
I'm telling you this is the way it is. I know, you're supposed to be
embarrassed about it, you're supposed to not talk about such things in
polite society, and that is what is wrecking society because no one will
face the fact that's what human nature is really like. You won't do it
with your human nature.
We're not going to do that here. We've done that long enough, denying
that this little petty chiseling, denying that that's the way human
nature is; it's like denying World War II ever happened, only this is
vastly worse. I'll tell you it concerns you very, very personally,
just the way you live; it has everything to do with everything you
encounter out in that world. And if we use the word 'conspiracy' many
times, there is a conspiracy of silence about the sickness that
inhabits the human mind.
I want you to know that freedom results from you seeing, just as that
man did, fully, experimentally and personally, that this is what
happens to you when you're asleep spiritually, mentally; when your whole
psychic system goes along with the pretense of society that everything
is good and everything is well - and you know in your heart that it
isn't well.
You are not going to get out of the self-trap until you go right into
that, go all the way through it and come out on the other side. And
guess who you're going to have to look at more closely than anyone
else. You know the answer to that - yourself."
