"Avoiding truth is like jumping off a ship before it reaches Treasure
Island. We're going to stay onboard. We want to become wise, not in our own
self-judgment and estimation, but a wisdom that is not a part of our
personal life, but comes from another source higher than ourselves. This
wisdom, look how simple the statement can be, this higher wisdom you
can have by staying onboard ship until it reaches Treasure Island.
This wisdom is not something that you have to work with to keep in place.
It's not something that you have to strain for. The very fact of
straining, of worrying over its appearance or of its loss or whether it's
going to guide you, the very fact that you worry means you are not in a
state of real wisdom, but are inventing it for the sake of your own false
needs.
So, we want to make sense out of the senseless. If that is what you want,
to make sense out of the senseless, then you have to stay onboard, and
that means this. It means when the voyage gets a little rough, you're not
going to say, 'I'm going to swim outside the boat and make it to my
destination.' You're not going to think, when the voyage gets rough -
and there are forces that want it to be very rough on you - you're not
going to say, 'I know better than the captain of the boat.' The minute
you say that, you'll have the urge to try to prove it, and there you are
out in the storm, swimming around, churning around, wondering where to go,
wondering what to do, and all the time now, trapped by the fact that you
have gone into an illusion that you know what to do with your life in the
direction you have taken.
You have a marvelous opportunity, and I want you to do it right during the
course of this talk, to know that the voyage is rough. Yes, it is rough,
but that's because you still have your doubts about the power and the
wisdom and the love of the captain of the boat, which is God."
