"AT THE PALACE
A disciple asked his teacher, 'What is the difference between intelligent
thinking and mechanical thinking?' The teacher replied, 'Wait a few days.'
The next week both men were part of an audience gathered for a public
ceremony on palace grounds. In front of them stood a tall man with a
glittering crown on his head and dressed in royal robes. Next to him was a
shorter man dressed in rags.
Exclaimed the disciple, 'What a dazzling crown on the king's head!'
Said the teacher, 'The ragged man is the king, who yearly shows his
humility. Now you know the difference between intelligent thinking and
mechanical thinking. Don't judge from external appearances.'
Mechanical thinking, which often makes mistakes, can be corrected by
pausing and pondering until all the facts become clear."
