"Keep that wish you have for something good, different, apart from you,
keep that wish alive by never, never settling for substitutes.
Now, what does that mean - this is a fascinating study - what does it mean
to not settle for substitutes? It means intense self-honesty.
If you were to recognize where you accepted a substitute activity for what
you really want - where you got frustrated and angry so you decided to
yield to the laziness inside, because the uncertainty is so painful to you.
A forced pleasure, that's what we're talking about, something that you
force yourself to do in order to settle the matter. So you got the
substitute and the substitute never satisfied - and you'll have missed what
you could have had.
Bearing the uncertainty of your life is the sole road to salvation. That
means you can't say, 'I'll give up'; you can't say, 'I'll make it easy on
myself.' You will say, 'I will do nothing but endure in the unknown quest.'
Of course you don't know what you're looking for and that's why it can
turn out profitably.
If you know what you're searching for, then all you're doing is
searching for another room inside yourself and you will find that and
you'll find a cot inside the room and you'll go to sleep in there.
Oh I tell you, if you want to be the hero of your own boat out there
drifting on the ocean of life, then you've got to stop being the hero.
You've got to allow yourself to allow God to prove His existence to you."
