"Facts about an authentic teacher
An authentic teacher instructs in ways which often puzzle the new student.
The baffled student cannot as yet see how he must be gently switched over
from mental curiosity to spiritual quest. The pupil might ask, 'What
rewards can we expect from our studies?' The teacher's reply is designed to
cut away the pupil's false assumption that the question was a right one:
'Please give attention to self-study alone, otherwise you will
unconsciously seek false rewards.' This produces a mild shock, which when
welcomed by the student increases his mental light."
