"EL-GHAZZALI OF ARABIA
El-Ghazzali was one of the greatest of the Sufi mystics in the Arabian
world. He was one of those rare individuals who smashed through a
particular barrier which prevents so many men from reaching
self-illumination.
Born in 1058, El-Ghazzali dedicated his life to a search for truth,
with no regard for where his search might take him. He collected a vast
storehouse of facts and views. His intellectual capacities were quickly
recognized, and he was made a professor of religion in a famous academy in
Baghdad.
But with all his great knowledge, El-Ghazzali felt restless and
unfulfilled. He sensed what had to be done - and did it. While keeping his
knowledge in its right place, he sacrificed the public applause and the
ego-gratification it had given him.
He then proved what every man must prove for himself: A willingness to
abandon surface personality makes room for universal consciousness. The
self-liberated El-Ghazzali taught, 'Your real self is pure bliss.'"
