"The mind is in the habit of naming things in the physical world, and that
habit keeps going and so you think it is also convenient, necessary, and
good for you to name yourself - and you do. You all have, we all have a name
by which we're called so that we can tell one person from another and get
the mail to the right person. And even that presents a problem, right?
How many of you don't like your name? How many of you love your name? How
many of you love the person in back of the name? How many have doubts?
So the naming process then becomes distorted and useless and very
dangerous. You are to understand what I am talking about as I'm talking
about it. You're part of this talk, you must be. These are words
and ideas that I'm giving you, healthy ones, supporting ones, truthful
ones, but you're to take these words and turn them into your knowledge,
your insight, so that it can go on from the word to straightening out
something inside that is now crooked. Something that needs healing.
Notice how often you do name yourself. I'll give you a phrase and I know
that it will be familiar to you; you might have to dig a little bit back,
but it will be familiar to you.' I am the kind of person who...' - fill in the
rest of the sentence.
And think of the emotions that go with it depending on the particular kind
of a person you are. I am the kind of a person who won't put up with
nonsense from anyone. I am someone who if I'm given a tough task I'll
see it through to the very end. I'm the kind of a person who's
independent of influences; no one tells me what to do.
And notice that the naming process, which is constant: it is always going
on, it didn't just happen once when you were twenty or thirty, it happens
every day in your life, because it is a false contribution to your false
nature.
Now, I'll tell you right now that only a non-existent person exists. Only
a non-existent person exists. You'll understand that as the talk goes on,
because you're going to take these thoughts and see how they explain the
fact that only a non-existent person exists."
