"THE THREE LEARNERS
About to take a journey, a teacher decided to take one of his disciples as
an assistant. Calling three learners before him, he said, 'On this trip you
will meet many upsetting experiences. How will you handle them for inner
profit?'
Said one disciple, 'I will imitate your responses to them.'
The second man answered, 'I will fight them and hope to win.'
Said the third disciple, 'I will calmly study my own reactions to them.'
The third disciple was chosen.
Freedom from upsetting experiences begins with impartial self-observation,
for that creates self-understanding."
