When you cannot bear the pain of the present condition of your life, your
mind which operates in time, immediately works in time in prophesying that
the future will be different, the future will be better.
Already you have made it impossible for you to ever change your future
because you have escaped from understanding the now, which could cancel the
future and the past as well.
So, a personal prophecy of what's going to happen to you, all the good
things of course, a personal prophecy becomes a very powerful way of
thinking in an individual's mind. He thinks where he's going to succeed in
the exterior world, how his physical conditions are going to be different.
He's going to live in a finer home or a nicer place and his human relations
are going to be different, much happier and prettier than they are now. So
he has all these dreams, all these prophecies as to how things are going to
be different from the way they are now. Now, can you imagine a rock
thinking?!
Imagine a rock out in the desert and the rock looks out in the distance and
it sees a tall tree of some kind and the rock says, 'I some day am going to
change into a tree. I don't like being a rock, I'm low, the dust hits me,
nobody notices me. I'm a rock today; tomorrow, a month from now, a year
from now, by my own effort I'm going to become a lofty tree, high instead
of low.' Imagine a rock thinking like that. Now, are there rockheads here?
Now look, a rock today will be a rock tomorrow.... A rock being mechanical
has no intelligence at all for change, will remain a rock, no matter what
it says, what it thinks about, how it daydreams. It must always remain
exactly what it is. There's no possibility for change in a rock.
There is a possibility for change in a human rockhead, if he understands
that. If he understands that by his own efforts, his own level, he can
change nothing. And this is a great mystery and great secret - which we're
solving in this room by the way."
