"Now I started the talk with asking you to whom are you directing your
prayer, your requests. This question must be so clearly answered by you
that you are jolted - so shocked by the answer to that question that you
begin to turn in the right direction.
I tell you that you are asking the only thing you have for help, which is
you the helpless, hopeless person. You're asking the helpless person for
help and you don't see it, and you write that down in your paper or your mind
somewhere so that you don't ever again make that mistake because you're not
going to go anywhere if you ask yourself for help. Question: come on now,
who do you have besides yourself to go to for help?
I'm trying to make you conscious of something, that you have no one. That's
the horror of it all. All you can do is turn inward to what is now
dominating you inwardly and ask that, and all you get are answers that are
no answers at all. Now, it is of equal folly to direct your quests and
questions to yourself as you now are, as it is to ask anyone you know out
there for help. Your thinking is so incredibly shallow.
I'm not talking about asking for help for repairing your car. The
mechanic can do that or the carpenter can tell you how to fix your house.
Why do you have any confidence at all in anyone outside of you? Well, I'll
tell you why. Because it's one of your last desperations to avoid the fact
that you don't know yourself; therefore, you justify and say, 'Well, I don't
know. I've got to ask someone else.' How do you know that he knows? How do
you know that she knows what she's talking about? I know you'll say he
does. Of course they'll parade out the degrees, the long years they've had
in giving religious, philosophical advice to people. What is wrong with
you? I'll answer that question.
What is wrong with you that you trust a human being who's in just as much
trouble as you are? But you don't see that and you don't want to see that.
You had better.
You better just give up. That's a spiritual rule - you have to give up. You
can't consult yourself anymore."
