The first five words in the verses above are, “You shall not be afraid.” In reading Psalm 91 up to this point, we are given reasons not to be afraid. God is our refuge and our fortress. He hides us under His feathers and is our shield. When God tells us to not be afraid, He has proven His faithfulness to us that we can trust Him.
Today’s verses seem to imply that nothing bad will ever happen to believers. The devil wants us to think that the promises of God have failed if God lets us suffer. But God promises to save us “in trouble” and not necessarily “from trouble.”
We are to be fearless regardless of what time of day it is: “terror by night,” the “arrow that flies by day,” the “pestilence that walks in darkness,” or the “destruction that lays waste at noonday.” Troubles can come at all times, whether it is during the day or night. How can we be fearless? By giving our fears to God, as He wants us to be anxious for nothing (Philippians 4:6).
This life is rampant with fears. We live in a society that faces fear with each passing day, from COVID-19 to the current civil unrest. In our personal lives, we can face financial hardships, failed marriages, estranged relationships, etc. As God’s children, we are not to let ourselves be slaves to fear.
Today’s verses assure us that there are no circumstances in this life that we need to be afraid of. Therefore, endeavor to walk in faith and without fear because God is always with you!
