"COUNT UP TO PENTECOST"

Counting the Omer 2024: Wednesday, April 24 – Wednesday, June 12, 2024
Aren't we all tired of all the negative and depressing "counting" that's been going on around the world? Be it days of war, mass shootings, or just plain, old gloom and doom? If we are going to count anything, why not count our blessings? And while we're at it, get in on the "count up" to Pentecost!
It was in this very season that the Lord called the Israelites to count fifty days from the first harvest in Nissan, "The Feast of First Fruits" (Jesus' Resurrection), to the second harvest in Sivan, "The Feast of Shavuot," otherwise known as "Pentecost." It's called "Counting the Omer."
An omer is a sheaf or measurement of grain. You can read all about it in Leviticus 23 and rejoice, as we are no longer under the laws of the Old Testament. But we can rest and still participate in the "count up" to Pentecost with hearts of great expectation.
It is also interesting and exciting to note how, in biblical history, the Lord gave great provision to His people on the final day of the count. It was on the fiftieth day when He gave the Torah (Exodus 19) and later gave His Spirit (Acts 2)—both gifts of great provision given on the very same day of Pentecost!
Even now, we are between two harvests. We may not have a physical field of wheat growing in our backyard, but the Lord has a harvest for each of us that is ripening. We may not even know what it is, but He does, and He is readying us for it.
So, let's get in on the "count up" to Pentecost with hearts of great expectation! And in all of our counting, let's be reminded that we can COUNT on Him!
Psalm 130:5–6 (NLT): "I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on Him. I have put my hope in His Word. I long for the Lord more than sentries long for the dawn, yes, more than sentries long for the dawn."
