Christmas season causes me to delve deeper into the well-known narrative and discover new truths. There's always some new perspectives and revelation to discover!
This year, I've been struck by the fact that the Christmas story is packed full of prophetic words, angelic visitations, pilgrimage travels, and miracles. The story unfolds with supernatural beauty, as Jesus entered time and space. While most of humanity was unaware, God's plan unfolded to prepare room for the Savior. Many of these moments occurred in unexpected ways, and the characters were completely surprised as God turned up in their world.
Mary's story is a great example of a holy, divine interruption. A young woman, betrothed to be married, suddenly finds herself pregnant with an unplanned child. In the glorious shock of that moment, Mary must have wondered how life would unfold. An angel had to tell Joseph, "Don't be afraid... this child is a gift!" In the middle of this awkward situation, they stewarded the unexpected, holy miracle.
Shepherds were met with a wild band of worshipping angels telling of the newborn king! While they sang, "Peace on Earth," there was nothing "peaceful" about their explosive song of wonder. The terrified, joyous shepherds rushed to find the Savior who would meet them in a manger. Another interrupted evening, another glorious miracle.
And the wisemen? How surprised they were to discover that Christ was born in a manger rather than in a palace! It took them additional time to get the right directions, but they didn't give up on finding him. Their holy pilgrimage was blessed in an unexpected way!
Your Christmas may not be the perfect "hallmark" moment. Like the birth of Christ, there may be some invitations to partner with Him in unexpected ways. May you discover the priceless wonder of finding the Savior in the midst of this crazy world, and take time to bask in the beauty of His love. Let's prepare Him room in our hearts and watch for miracles!
