WHAT IF I GET IT WRONG?
BETHANY HICKS, ROUND ROCK, TX
Let's be honest—one of the biggest things that holds people back from prophesying is the fear of missing it. "What if I get it wrong? What if I misrepresent God by saying something He never said?" It's a valid concern. Representing God's heart with integrity matters deeply. But here's the truth: God isn't asking for your perfection, He's looking for your participation. Jesus already took care of perfect. What He wants now is your yes.
Part of the fear of not wanting to get a prophetic word wrong comes from our misunderstanding of prophetic responsibility. Paul clarifies the responsibilities for the giver and receiver of a prophetic word in 1 Thessalonians 5:20–21: "Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good" (ESV).
Notice what Paul doesn't say. He doesn't say, "Make sure every prophetic word is perfectly accurate before you share it." He puts the responsibility not on the speaker to be flawless but on the receiver to weigh the word. The implication? Not every word given will always be 100 percent correct. And that's okay. Paul's instruction to "hold fast what is good" is a new covenant way of saying, "Eat the meat; spit out the bones." Again, Paul reinforces that sometimes you may receive a word that is good but not necessarily God, and the proper response is to hold fast to the parts that God is speaking to, and use your power as a receiver to not come into agreement with anything that His breath is not on.
I want to make sure that you are not hearing what I am not saying. I am not saying that prophecy is some free-for-all form of positivity and that it doesn't really matter if we are accurate or not. Prophecy is the voice and breath of God to encourage and strengthen others, and we should continue to grow through practice in our ability to recognize His voice to us, so that we can accurately represent His heart and message to the world around us. But, if we do miss it... there's grace. We are learning to recognize the voice of God, and learning takes practice and space. Why do we offer grace to those learning to teach or evangelize but often shut down those learning to prophesy? The Church cannot mature in prophecy if we don't make room for people to practice in a safe, healthy environment.
So yes—take the risk. Share what you sense He is saying. And know that if you're delivering a word with humility and love, you're doing it right, even if it's not perfect. Take courage today: God has wired you to hear His voice. There is a wide, grace-filled space available for you to discover what His voice sounds like. Lay down the pressure of performance. And if you get it wrong sometimes, like a child stumbling while learning to walk, your heavenly Father celebrates every step you take toward hearing and releasing His heart.
