NEVER FORGET... ALWAYS ADVANCE
DR. SCOTT REECE, BETTENDORF, IOWA
I remember September 11, 2001, like it was yesterday. The images, the shock, the questions... It's a day forever etched into my heart. Like most of you, I can still recall where I was, what I was doing, and how the atmosphere seemed to shift in a single moment as the world changed before our eyes.
It hits me deep, because I personally stood on top of the Twin Towers with some close friends not too long before the attack. I can still picture the view, the height, the feeling of being there... and to know those towers fell, taking thousands of lives with them, is something that still shakes me.
That morning reminded us of the fragility of life and the sobering reality that evil is real. It was a day of deep grief, but also a day when we witnessed courage, sacrifice, and resilience rise out of the ashes. We saw ordinary people do extraordinary things. We saw unity, prayer, and compassion emerge in a nation shaken to its core.
As I reflect today, the remembrance of 9/11 is not just about looking back, but also about posturing ourselves forward. The enemy's intent is always destruction, but God's intent is always redemption. What the enemy meant for evil, God can still turn for good.
Just as towers fell, the systems of man will always prove fragile, but the Kingdom we belong to is unshakable. Hebrews 12 reminds us that everything that can be shaken will be shaken, so that what cannot be shaken may remain. In the middle of national shaking, economic shaking, and personal shaking, we are called to stand firm on Christ, the Cornerstone who does not crumble.
I believe the call of 9/11 is this: Remember, but do not remain stuck in the past; redeem the memory by advancing the Kingdom. The tears of that day should fuel our urgency to preach the Gospel. The unity we tasted briefly as a nation should stir our hearts for true Kingdom unity in the Body of Christ. The sorrow of loss should ignite compassion for the broken and the hurting in our day.
I remember 9/11. I remember the fear. I remember the pain. But I also remember the presence of God drawing near, and today, I declare, as we remember, let us rise. Let us be the watchmen on the wall, the intercessors who cry out, the laborers who go into the harvest, and the voices that call a generation back to God.
The world may be shaken again, but the Kingdom cannot be shaken. Let us live with urgency, love with abandon, and shine with unquenchable hope.
Never forget... always advance.
