GOD IS CALLING US TO STOP AND REST
ROSANGELA ATTE, MAPLE RIDGE, BC
Do you find it hard to stop and rest?
If you are someone like me, with many passions and skills, you especially find it hard to rest. And this might be why. I've realized that my constant working, whether it's cleaning my house, cooking, creating content, or working at my shop, isn't just about productivity. It's about survival. I keep finding something to do, and by the end of the day, I am utterly exhausted, physically, mentally and emotionally.
I know in my spirit that God is calling me to stop being a Martha and start being a Mary. But as a perfectionist, that feels like the hardest shift to make. The truth is, all of this striving is rooted in childhood trauma. Letting go feels dangerous, because it means surrendering control, and control has always given me a sense of safety—safety I didn't have growing up. But here's the revelation: control is only a perception. Even with all my effort, I still can't control what happens around me. The endless doing gives the illusion of security, but not the reality of it.
I think this is where many of us struggle. Those who find it hardest to rest are often those carrying unhealed childhood or early adulthood trauma. Our nervous system was trained to believe: If I don't stay vigilant, something will go wrong. If I stop moving, I won't be safe. That's why rest doesn't come just by knowing God said so. The resistance is not stubbornness, it's subconscious. It's written into the body, into the mind, into old survival patterns.
The way forward is not just forcing ourselves to rest but healing at the roots, facing the beliefs, the wounds, and the stories that keep us bound to striving. Only then can rest become more than an idea; it can become a reality. Because true rest is not the absence of work; it's the presence of safety, and only His love can give us that.
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28–30 ESV)
"Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!" (Psalm 34:8 ESV)
