"FILL IT TO THE BRIM"
LORI SALLEY, HERMANVILLE, MS
Somewhere over the ocean to Uganda, I woke up from a dream. In it, I heard a voice say, "Fill it to the brim." It was one of those moments you don't ignore.
So, I grabbed my Bible and started reading John 2 again—the story where Jesus turns water into wine. And this time, there was a message in it for me for now. The part that stood out wasn't about the miracle itself... it was about the servants. (And water and water wells happened to be on my mind too.)
Mary tells them, "Do whatever He says," and they actually do it. Jesus tells them to fill up six stone jars with water. We all know this part. But I started imagining that moment. Each jar held between twenty and thirty gallons, and they didn't have running water. No faucet. That meant walking back and forth to the well, bucket after bucket after bucket.
I know firsthand how tiring and sweaty that kind of task can be. That's everyday life for so many people in Uganda. But these servants did it. And not only that, but they also filled them to the brim! He just said fill them. They went above and beyond.
Then came the next step: take some out and give it to the master of the feast. Can you imagine that moment? You've just worked your tail off filling those jars, and now you're supposed to scoop out plain old well water and serve it like it's fine wine.
It's one thing to do what Jesus asks when it makes sense, when it's physical and practical. But when it requires faith... when you can't see how it's going to turn out... that's where it gets real.
At this point, the water still looked like water. And those stone jars weren't even meant to hold drinking water; they were used for washing dirty hands and feet. Yet, Jesus tells them to get what they collected—what seems ordinary—and give it to the man in charge of tasting everything at the celebration.
It would be like walking to your bathroom sink, scooping up some well water, and handing it to the head caterer. Every part of that felt wrong. I can't help but wonder what was running through their minds. Fear? Embarrassment? I think that's where a lot of us get stuck—fear, or get too focused on ourselves.
But today He's asking: "Will you listen and obey? Will you trust Me? Are you willing to look like an idiot? Will you do it even if it doesn't make total sense?"
For me, He's challenging me again: Are you ready to see some water turned into wine? It says at the end of that chapter, His glory was revealed because of their obedience. And really, isn't that what we're all living for? To reveal Him.
