ASCENDING THE HEIGHTS
WANDA ALGER, WINCHESTER, VA
In a recent dream, I found myself walking through deep terrain with some young assistants. It was a road less traveled and required strength and agility to traverse the steeper portions of the journey. But even though the journey should have been physically and mentally challenging, I was able to do it without hesitation.
At one point I found myself climbing a steep, rocky cliff. As if flying from rock to rock, I thought of the parkour sport where athletes skip and run from place to place, barely touching the surfaces. I was amazed at my ability to do this and noticed that I was doing it with bare feet. Where shoes may have seemed the better choice to protect myself from the rough edges, in having bare feet, I could actually feel the surfaces and grip them better. It gave me great confidence and added momentum in ascending very quickly. What should have been hard and painful was actually exhilarating and fun.
But then I began to hesitate. I wondered if this was really possible and thought of the dangers of falling off this massive rock wall. It was then that I slowed down and wasn't able to climb like I had before. I quickly realized I needed to approach this ascent with confidence. If I hesitated and thought of all that could go wrong, I wouldn't have the momentum to move forward. I had to approach it without any doubts and trust in this unnatural ability that was provided.
"He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights." (Psalms 18:33 ESV)
"You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip." (Psalm 18:36 ESV)
The lasting impression upon waking from this dream was the joy I had in ascending with bare feet. I could literally feel the rocks on my flesh as I flew up the cliff. I found the greatest freedom in "feeling" my way up.
I believe this is the lesson in this night parable. It is in making ourselves vulnerable to the Lord and yielding to a sensitivity of the Spirit that will give us the needed confidence to get through the rough places. It is in trusting the inner promptings of the Holy Spirit to direct every step we take that will enable us to overcome the mountains before us.
Voices may whisper in your ears to cover and protect yourself from harm and not be so sensitive. But Holy Spirit says to trust Him. Your sensitivity and your vulnerability to His presence and direction is the very thing that will propel you forward, empower your ascent, and take you to the heights.
