I just wanted to post a summation of the HJR 1 situation based on my trip to Columbus yesterday. Getting HJR 1 on the August ballot appears to be our best option for defeating the proposed abortion amendment that likely will be on the November ballot. The abortion amendment, if passed, will enshrine abortion on demand up to birth into the Ohio Constitution, overturning all our pro-life victories over the past several decades and turning Ohio from a pro-life to a pro-death state.
The discharge petition for House Joint Resolution 1, Require 60% vote to approve any constitutional amendment, is now dead. The resolution was passed out of the House Constitutional Resolutions Committee on Wednesday, April 19. The discharge petition was only possible while the resolution was in committee. Once it was passed by the committee the resolution headed to the full House where its fate is now in the hands of Speaker Jason Stevens.
Meanwhile, Mike Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life, was circulating a signature petition among the Representatives asking Speaker Stephens to bring HJR 1 to the floor for a vote should it pass out of the committee so that it can appear on the August ballot. Stevens has indicated that he will bring the resolution to a vote if the petition has 60 signatures. As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition still needed at least 5 signatures.
With the demise of the discharge petition, we need to get 60 signatures as soon as possible, meaning by the end of this week. Some groups are claiming that we have until May 10 to get this done in order to ensure that HJR 1 will be on the August ballot. However, May 5 is a more realistic deadline so that it has time to get through all the procedural hoops necessary to make it to the August ballot. Consequently, we need to get 60 signatures this week so that a floor vote can take place next week.
Getting HJR 1 on the August ballot is fundamental to protecting Ohio’s unborn children. The pro-death camp is determined to get their abortion on demand amendment into the Ohio Constitution this November. It is likely that they will get just over 50% but not likely that they would reach 60%. Consequently, getting HJR 1 passed in August is our best opportunity to protect Ohio’s unborn children.
Please call, text, or email your representative today and urge them to sign the Ohio Right to Life petition to bring HJR 1 to the floor for a vote as soon as possible. You should also contact Speaker Stevens and urge him to bring HJR 1 to the floor for a vote in the next week. Special note regarding Rep. Sharon Ray:
As of Wednesday, Rep. Ray had not signed the Ohio Right to Life petition. She appears to be wavering, waiting to see which way the wind is blowing. There is reason to believe, however, that she might sign if she gets enough pressure from constituents.
