This, is a wadi. You may notice the water in this one, but wadis tend to dry out. You can find wadis in many deserts around the world, including the Judean Wilderness where David tended sheep. Wadis are very dangerous in that desert storms cause floods, sometimes miles away, which come roaring upon unsuspecting people who are exploring the dry wadi far beyond the reach of the claps of thunder. Another feature that makes wadis even more dangerous is the clay that can often be found in the areas that hold water longer. It is a sticky clay that can be difficult to get out of if one steps in too far - much like a shallow quicksand. But losing a shoe is not the real danger. When the flood comes, one must move quickly. While tending sheep, the shepherd must know the danger and steer the flock clear of these areas lest his lambs become stuck and drown in the rising water. You see, flood water is not 'still water'. Beautiful? Yes. But very dangerous. David wrote:
Psa 40:1-2
(1) To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. (2) He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, knows how to take care of HIS flock. He leads us beside still waters - far from the wadi.
