The Feast of Tabernacles during the time of Jesus would have been something to see. Herod's temple was a magnificent structure, and in the outer court there were four gargantuan menorahs - 75 feet high. The light from these four menorahs alone lit most of the city, and it is said that they also lit the face of the Mount of Olives across the valley. During this feast, sometimes referred to as "the great feast" by the gospel writers, they held what was called the Illumination of the Temple, a ceremony focused upon the lighting of these massive oil-fed lamps. John 7 records Jesus's activities during this feast. It was also during the time of such a ceremony that Jesus makes the declaration, "I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Remember this as darkness seems to be prevalent in the world. Darkness cannot prevail over anyone who carries the light of Jesus within.
