There is so much in this weeks Parashat. When you read the word of God from a Jewish perspective you learn the story before is significant to what you are about to read. The last thing we read last week was the sign of the covenant, circumcision. Our next story picks up this week with God coming to visit Abraham. According to outside texts and Jewish commentary God has come to Abraham 3 days after his circumcision. The 3rd day of circumcision is the most painful day of the recovery. Abraham was God’s friend and He came to check on him.

The next story is the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Notice how God says can I not tell Abraham what I am going to do? Abraham is now in covenant with God. God cannot hold anything back from the only person He has covenant with on the planet.

Here is something for you to think about, it is Abraham’s fault Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed.

God could not call Sodom and Gomorrah to judgement until He had someone in covenant with Him. Abraham negotiated with God to save Sodom from 50 to 10. Here is what you may not know. Lot had 2 sons and 4 daughters.

Genesis‬ ‭19:12‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“Meanwhile, the angels questioned Lot. “Do you have any other relatives here in the city?” they asked. “Get them out of this place—your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone else.”
‭‭
Abraham knew this and he thought Lot should at least be able to convince his family that it was time to leave Sodom. Lot failed in being a Godly example in Sodom.

We know from the Bible that the people of Sodom said they desired to have sex (rape) with the angles that Lot was entertaining. It was men of all ages that came out to have assault the angels. This was the practice of this city. External sources tell us that the people of these cities would give strangers gold and silver when they came to town. When the stranger would try to buy food they would not sell to him. After the stranger starved to death the people would take back their gold and silver. They would then take the strangers possession and divide it amoungst themselves.

There is a story where Eliezer Abraham’s servant goes to Sodom to check on Lot. He sees a man being beaten and stands up for him. The man who was the aggressor threw a rock which hit Eliezer in the head. He began to bleed. The man then told Eliezer he now owes him money for letting the evil blood from him. Eliezer and the man go before the judge of the city and both tell their sides of the story. The judge sides with the aggressor and tells Eliezer he owes the man for the service he did for him, as it was the custom of the city. Eliezer becomes furious then takes a rock and strikes the judge in the head. The judge begins to bleed. Eliezer then tells the judge he owes him for the service he just gave him. Eliezer told the judge to take what he now owes him and pay the man who attacked him. This is just a few of the many things they would do to take advantage of people who came to their city.

The Bible is clear that in the end it will be like it was in the days of Noah and like it was in the days of Lot. Both periods of time had sexual sin. In Noah’s time the Fallen Angles mingled with humans and created Giants, and all kinds of abominations with humans and animals. Today we have DNA being altered. We have animals being altered. Just this week a pigs kidney was altered and used in a brain dead person who had kidney failure. In Lot’s days homosexuality and orgies ran wild as normal everyday way of life. Evil was called good and good was called evil. You can see we are in the days of Noah and Lot just by watching the news. It is time the church wakes up and takes a stand like Eliezer.

Melissa Dohms Yes, the changes with in the creation of God are distorting them in such despicable ways. I am starting to understand what the times of Sodom and Gomorrah were like by the decline of morals all around us.
