What's In A Name?

  • What’s in a Name?

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
    (Revelation 1:8 NIV)

Most of us have multiple names including nicknames that we, or sometimes others, choose for us. Often, the additional names describe special attributes or characteristics of the individual. Even our rat terrier, Jazzy, has several nicknames - Sweet Baby Jazzy and The Jazz.

Our God has  many names that describe who He is. He is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Adonai (Lord, Master), El Shaddai (God Almighty), just to name a few. Every name that He has represents His character and His omnipotence.

In today’s verse, He is also the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Almighty. Why is this important for today? With all the uncertainty we are facing, we can know that the God who is everything from the beginning of time and to all eternity, is not surprised at what we are facing.

Therefore, we can press into His goodness and have the faith to believe that He is with us and will see us through everything to the end. We are not alone.

God is in control and therefore in everything I can give thanks. - Kay Arthur
