After His Crucifixion, Jesus was placed in a tomb nearby. Imagine how His followers must have felt. Their hopes and dreams were dashed in a moment; they were heartbroken having witnessed such a cruel death of the One they loved.
The disciples had scattered when Jesus was arrested, and they spent the Sabbath hiding for fear of also being arrested. The day between Christ’s Crucifixion and His Resurrection was a time of grief and shock, with the stunned disciples trying to understand the murder of Jesus, the betrayal of Judas, and the dashing of all their hopes.
How does this apply to us? Even when we feel hopeless, we need to remember the ultimate price that Christ paid for us by dying on the Cross as the perfect sacrificial Lamb for our sins. He is the "hope of all the world" (Matthew 12:21).
God is looking for broken men who have judged themselves in the light of the cross of Christ. When He wants anything done, He takes up men who have come to the end of themselves, whose confidence is not in themselves, but in God.
