Firstfruits

  • Firstfruits

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
    (1 Corinthians 15:20-22 ESV)

    firstfruits

In the Feast of First Fruits (Leviticus 23:9-12) the Hebrews were to bring the first sheaves of the barley harvest and wave them before the LORD. The priest would then present them to the LORD by waving them back and forth. The purpose of this was to consecrate the harvest to the LORD. The firstfruits were representative of the entire harvest. This act reminded Hebrews that the land and all its harvest rightfully belonged to God.

We read in the Gospel accounts that the resurrection of Jesus occurred on the first day of the week. Since Jesus was crucified during Passover, this happened during the week of unleavened bread. As Jesus was being raised up, the Priests in the Temple would have been waving the firstfruits offering for that year.

Only perfection can enter God's presence. Jesus rose to heaven after His resurrection and went before God's throne, presenting Himself as the official fulfillment of the Feast of First Fruits. Jesus went before God also as the perfect sacrifice to open the way for those who believe in Him to enter God's throne room.

When I put God first, God takes care of me and energizes me to do what really needs to be done.
    - David Jeremiah
