This week’s Parashat the Lord continues to speak aloud to the congregation giving them the rest of the Law. The Lord speaks giving more laws for 3 chapters. He then promises His presence to the nation of Israel if they obey Him.

God calls Moses up to the mountain gives him instructions. Moses goes to the people and repeats the entire Law to them. Moses then writes the entire law and reads it to the people. So at this point the people heard the Lord, Himself give them the Law. Then Moses gives them the Law 2 times before He is called up the mountain to learn how to instruct the people to follow the Law. Three times the people say to Moses we will do everything the Lord commands.

God then calls Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and the 70 elders to come up the mountain. These elders saw into Heaven and saw the feet of God (Exodus 24:6-11). They then had a covenant meal in the presence of God and they did not die. God approved the new Government of Israel. He ordained it and sent His servant Jethro to set things in motion.

Three weeks from now we will read about the Golden Calf incident. God is pro government He has created men and women to govern. The 70 elders will end up failing the people and God when they do nothing to stop the people from giving into fear. We are seeing the same thing happen today with our world governments. We have men and women in power who fear man and are not standing up to do the right thing. When people in power don’t stand up for what is right everyone suffers. It is our job to pray for those in authority over us to be just and upright.
