This week we read how Joseph moves from the prison to the palace. The 17 year old boy we were introduced to is now a humbled man 30 years of age. He is ready for the dreams to come to pass. In the Joseph story there are a total of 6 dreams. Each dream has is paired with another bringing confirmation. Joseph has 2 dreams at 17 years old. The Baker and Cup Bearer each have a dream. Pharaoh himself had 2 dreams.
Each of the dreams have 1 thing in common. They are all deal with time. Joseph’s 1st dream deals with harvest time. His 2nd dream deals with sun, moon and stars. We are told the sun, moon and stars are for us to be able to discern times and seasons. The Baker and Cup Bearer’s dreams showed a specific time 3 days later one would be restored and one would be executed. Pharaoh had 2 dreams one with cows and one with wheat. Both signified 2, 7 year periods of time. 7 years of overflow and 7 of great and horrible famine.
Our God is a God who has ordained and orchestrated all of time. Joseph is the most Christ like character in Genesis and all of the Old Testament. He went to Egypt for protection of the family for a future time. Jesus when He was born and the Wise Men appeared Joseph Jesus’s earthly Father had an Angel appear in a dream (his 2nd dream). The Angel told Joseph to take Jesus to Egypt where He would be saved. Later Joseph had another dream telling him to go to Nazareth. This fulfilled the the timing and plans of God. At the end of Jesus’s life there was another Joseph a rich man who gave his tomb up for the King of Kings.
God has orchestrated it all. Look at this scripture in the 1st chapter of Matthew.
15 “Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob. 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.”
Look at the names:
Eliud - God of Majesty
Eleazar - A Representative, a Stamp or Scar, Pattern
Matthan - To Split, or Sever, Break , Divide, Open, Make Rent
Jacob - Take by the Heel, the Rear, to Circumvent, to Restrain, Supplant
Joseph - Craziness, Let Him Add, Give More Over
The pattern repeats itself even in the birth of Jesus. The God of Majesty sent a representative who would be stamped with a scar who will be the pattern. He will split and sever the culture. He will divide time and people. He will open the Temple and rent the curtain to the Holy of Holies making room for all. He will grab the enemy by the heel. He will come from the rear where no one expects Him he will restrain the enemy and supplant him. It will appear crazy, He will give more than anyone and He will add us to His Kingdom.
The creator of time has created it with purpose and meaning. He is telling His story in every moment of time. Do not let this Christmas Season go by without seeing everything He has done for you. As you look at what He has done, begin to look at what He has in store for you. He has created you with purpose to tell His story. His story is our story.
