This past week we have heard political speech after political speech. Many were filled with lies and half truths. All were full of fear boasting they are the only ones to bring hope. I am so glad my hope is not in man, the government, or my job. This week all across the world in every synagogue the book of Deuteronomy has been read the past 3 weeks. It will continue to be read for a few more weeks. Deuteronomy is a series of speeches give by Moses full of truth. If we are going to listen to speeches let us listen to ones full of truth and hope.
In chapter 8 of Deuteronomy Moses tells the people God humbled them in the wilderness. God used the past 40 years to build their character. God used the time in the wilderness to see if they would obey His Commands. Yes God humbled you causing you to starve. What God caused them to not have food. You mean God made their stomachs growl. He said God did it to teach we do not live by bread alone, but by every living word of God. For 40 years their clothes nor shoes didn’t wear out. They didn’t even get a blister nor their feet swell. Now let’s make this personal. For the past 4 years God has humbled us. He has tested us to see if we will obey His Commands. Have you learned from the past 4 years to obey the Lord?
Moses goes on to say that God like a parent disciplines us like a parent does a child. This is for our own good. If we obey we get to enter the Promised Land full of food and provision. However if we get so focused on the good and forget God there are consequences. God gives us a warning not to forget Him. If we become proud and forget what God has done we will be destroyed. If we bow down to false gods we will certainly be destroyed. This is where we are now. We let our focus be on a man running for office and not on the one who created man. We bowed down to politics. We bowed down to a slogan. We bowed down to a party. Because we bowed a knee God has used the past 4 years to humble us. God will not share His Glory with any man. No man will get credit for what God has done. The question is have we learned the lesson? Have we been humbled? Are we ready to obey the Lord’s Commands? One way or the other come November we will know the answer.
