God destroyed everything on the Earth in last week’s Parashat. The world had become so corrupt that God said that His Spirit will not put up with humanity for such a long time. In the future man will only live for 120 years. God recreated the Earth. Once Noah leaves the Ark God speaks to him. God tells him everything He told Adam with subtle changes. Man can now eat the animals.
As the Earth is repopulated the people come together and use the newest technology of the day. The people come together and say let us brick bricks. Notice they didn’t say let’s build a structure. They said let us make bricks. After they make bricks they say let’s build a tower to build a name for ourselves. God then comes down and changes the language of man. Now we have the creation of nations.
This week we are introduced to Abram. Abram is told by God to head west to a land God will show him. What is significant about the direct Abram goes is the people were in the East which is where the Sun worshipers face. Abram turned his back on the world and their ways. The first thing Abram does is build God and alter. Then as he moves to the next location Abram builds another alter to the Lord. Notice Abram never builds himself a permenant structure. The only thing Abram builds that is permenant is for God. Notice the difference between Abram and the tower builders. Abram is not building a name for himself.
We are going to read about Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus tells us in Luke 17 that the coming of the Son of Man will be like the days of Lot and Noah. We are in the days of Lot and Noah now. Noah represents genetic manipulation. We have been doing that for decades. I remember in the 90s cloning sheep was all the rage. Now we have the ability to help women who are unable to have children now have 8 at the same time. We have new vaccines called MNRA which alter DNA. We are in the days of Noah. Just recently the P-Diddy scandal broke and we are now in the days of Lot. Lot is about sexual corruption and merchandising people and taking advantage of them. They are building a name for themselves.
In order to prosper in this season we have to be like Abram. We have to focus building God’s name and not our own. God is looking for a Bride to share His name with. Why should He share His name when you are building your own? We are entering a season where we have to be obedient like never before. We have to move in faith. We have to walk away from the familiar and go to the unknown. Can God trust you enough to call you His friend?
