We begin the Parashat Cycle again this week. This is one of my favorite readings of the year. I get so excited and learn so much each year from Bereshit, In the Beginning. Out of anything God could have had written about Himself, He chose to tell us what is written in Genesis.
Genesis 1:1-5
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”
We learn here that all three Father, Son and Spirit are all here in the beginning. The word tells us that God created the Heavens and the Earth. That is Father God. We are then told about the Spirit which is hovering over the water. Then God says let there be Light. That is the Son. Before anything is created God says let there be Light. Let me ask you a question. Do you create or build anything in the dark? No you don’t create in the dark. This Light is not the sun and moon they were created in day 4. The Light that God is saying let there be is His Son, whom He created the world for to Glorify His Name.
Notice that there is already a space that is void which has water. That means something was there before in which God created. Now there is a place that is void. It is place that can hold water. Could this be what was left after Satan fell from Heaven. Jesus tells us He saw Satan thrown from Heaven. Could Satan hitting the Earth like lightning have destroyed what was originally created. Notice dinosaurs, nor wooly mammoths are not mentioned in the creation story. These animals represent 2 independent times that can be found in the Earth that date back millions of years. However they are not mentioned in our creation story. The question is what or whose creation story is it? The creation story is our creation story. The story of Humanity’s creation is what we are reading in Genesis. God has lived long before He created the Earth. Are we so vain to think God didn’t create anything before He created Mankind?
If you take your time and read through the 1st 5 chapters of Genesis you will learn so much about God’s character. God knows that Adam needs a mate. So what does He do. He creates every animal, bird, fish, and creeping thing. He has Adam name them all before He creates Eve. Why did God do that? God already knew that the animals were not a suitable mate for Adam. God desired Adam to realize that the animals were not a proper mate for him. God is a teacher. He teaches through experience and takes time to make sure you get it.
Before Cain killed Able God came to Cain to warn him that sin was crouching at the door of his heart. Cain did not heed God’s advice he allowed his bitterness to get the best of him. Cain kills his brother Able. When God comes to Cain to confront him he has no remorse for his actions. God then cursed Cain where the earth would not produce for him. God still loved him enough to mark him in such a way that he would be protected. Here are the take aways about God’s character. God never lets us go through something without warning us first. Even when we mess up God still loves us even though we have to be disciplined. God has a plan for us. God is not mean or cruel He is a loving Father. I challenge you to read through the 1st 5 chapters of Genesis looking for the characteristics of God. There is so much more than I have time to write about now. Please share what you see in the comments.
