This week we read the Jews are finally free of Egypt’s hold on them. The big event is the splitting of the Red Sea. However this year I would like to focus on what happened after this powerful event. Now everyone stops what they are doing and Moses leads them in a song of deliverance. As soon as the song is over, the word tells us Miriam gathered up all the women and sang another song.
Exodus 15:20-21
“Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced. And Miriam sang this song: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.””
Notice that God calls Miriam a prophet. In all of the Torah there are only 4 people called a prophet:
1. When Abraham lied to King Abimelech about Sarah being his sister. God came to the King in a dream and called Abraham a prophet.
Genesis 20:7
“Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet. Then you will live. But if you don’t return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die.””
Let me go Sheldon Cooper on you with a fun fact all the women became infertile. Some translations say their wombs were closed. This means every pregnant woman just miscarried. How else would Abimelech know that the dream was real. A generation was last because of God’s protection of His Prophet’s wife Sarah.
2. God tells Moses He has made him appear as a God to Pharaoh and Aaron will appear to Pharaoh as Moses Prophet.
Exodus 7:1
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pay close attention to this. I will make you seem like God to Pharaoh, and your brother, Aaron, will be your prophet.”
3. Miriam is called a Prophet.
4. God says there was never another Prophet like Moses who spoke with God face to face.
Deuteronomy 34:10
“There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.”
No one else is called a Prophet in the Torah. What is interesting is the introduction of Miriam.
Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister. Notice how Moses is not mentioned. The reason Moses is not mentioned is because Moses was the prophesy she gave. This means Miriam was a prophet at a very young age. She prophesied to her parents that if they had another child he would be the savior who would deliver the people from slavery. Miriam never gave up on the word God gave her. When her parents gave up and put Moses in the ark and sent him down the river, Miriam followed after to see what would happen to the word. She was used to make the prophecy come to pass when she sees Pharaoh’s Daughter reaching out for the ark. Miriam asked Pharaoh’s Daughter can I fetch a mother to nurse the child. Miriam helped the Princess make the decision to save Moses. Now 80 years later Miriam finally sees the prophecy come to pass. Notice God uses a little girl. Jesus tells us to have faith as a child. The world also says a child will lead them. Miriam was so young that she did not have the mentality of a slave. For 40 years she did not know if Moses was even alive. Now what has God told you? It will come to pass. It does not matter your age, gender, race, or nationality. God uses women all throughout the word. For anyone who says women or children are not qualified to be ministers you do not know nor have you studied the word of God to show yourself approved.
